INTRODUCTORY ULTRASOUND FOR PREGNANCY ASSESSMENT (IUPA) courses are delivered with a focus on practical sessions

 

The UTS IUPA courses are designed for candidates with little or no prior ultrasound experience.

 

The IUEM course is overseen by Dr. Paddy Moore, consultant physician.

 

Course objectives

At the conclusion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the physical principles and artifacts of ultrasound, knobology and image optimisation

  • Gain experience in navigating the ultrasound system and its features

  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing and interpreting bedside ultrasound examinations

  • Understand the applications and limitations of of transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound in the pregnancy setting

  • Understand the intrauterine and extrauterine appearances of ectopic pregnancy

  • Gain an understanding of sonoembryology in the 1st trimester of pregnancy

  • Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound assessment and understand the sonographic appearances of the uterus and ovaries

  • Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound assessment of first trimester pregnancy

  • Understand the principles of assessment of first trimester bleeding

  • Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in third trimester biometric assessment

  • Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in assessment of fetal well being, placental location and assessment of the cervix

Introductory Ultrasound for Pregnancy Assessment Program

Day 1

Basic physics, instrumentation, knobology and image optimisation
Practical session - image optimisation
Non- pregnant pelvis - clinical algorithms, sonographic apperances and sonographic technique
Practical session – Non- pregnant pelvis transabdominal scanning

Day 2

First trimester pregnancy ultrasound - clinical algorithms, sonographic appearances and sonographic technique
Practical session – Transabdominal scanning
Abnormal first trimester ultrasound – pain and bleeding, ectopic and PUL’s - sonographic appearances and sonographic technique
A clinicians perspective
Practical session – case studies
Transvaginal scanning principles
Practical session – transvaginal scanning on phantoms

Day 3

Practical session – transvaginal scanning
3rd trimester – maternal environment
Practical session – third trimester scanning
Fetal biometry
Practical session - third trimester scanning

Day 4

Practical session - third trimester scanning
Fetal well being assessment - clinical algorithms, sonographic appearances and sonographic technique
Practical session – fetal well being assessment
Practical session - revision
